TMJ / TMD
As you open and close your mouth, your tempromandibular joints (TMJ) rotate and glide back and forth. You use this joint anytime you move your jaw, like when you speak or eat.
Jaw pain and joint ache caused by Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) occurs when the jaw muscles and joints become misaligned. TMD can cause long-term discomfort, pain, and headache.
The TMJ is one of the most used joints in your body and when your jaw hurts, it can be one of the most uncomfortable and nagging aches you have.
How Do You Treat TMJ Issues?
TMD and TMJ problems can be caused by a number of factors and Dr. Michael Zampieri has been trained to diagnose them and create the appropriate TMJ treatment plan. During your visit, we can help identify the cause of your jaw pain. Once we have determined what is causing your discomfort with the TMJ, we can then determine the best course of TMJ treatment.
TMJ treatment options we recommend may include:
- Wearing a dental appliance (e.g., a specialized mouth guard) that helps the TMJ have time to heal
- Prescribing medication to ease the inflammation of the jaw area
- Avoiding foods, especially gum, that require extensive chewing
- Applying hot and cold therapy to relax the muscles, ligaments, and area surrounding the TMJ
If you are experiencing jaw pain or headaches, it may be related to TMD. Call our Fort Lee office today to set up an appointment to get started with the appropriate TMJ treatment.
